I heard this amazing story of how God pulled this member of a Los Angeles gang out of his situation and brought him into a community of Bible believing followers of Christ. A few months after getting baptized and joining the church, this young man slipped back into his old way of life. The people who were closest to him said that his reasoning for leaving his new found life was not that he couldn’t control his addictions, or his life was threatened by his old gang, but rather, his reasoning for leaving was he said that he was expecting the church to be more like a family than it was.
It is really sad that a gang knows more about community and fellowship than the church.
I don’t think that Jesus Christ was excited about the Western world’s view of the church when he was on the cross. I really don’t think there is anything in scripture that states that Jesus died for the huge megachurches, their grand pianos, or their great big jumbo screens. Jesus Christ died for people.
Christianity is not a religion for an individual. In order for God to be seen by an outside world, it takes a community of believers all living like Jesus together. If the church reached out to people like Jesus met peoples needs, forgave like Jesus forgave, and loved like Jesus loved, we wouldn’t have to come up with innovative ways to get people in the church doors.
